The Compact High Performance of Springfield's Hellcat Pro Comp OSP

The Compact High Performance of Springfield's Hellcat Pro Comp OSP

POST DATE: Aug 1, 2024

Much like other handguns in the compact 9mm category, Springfield’s own Hellcat has seen its fair share of iterations along the same lines as pretty much every other micro-compact 9mm to date. The relatively new Springfield Hellcat Pro Comp OSP is the latest iteration in the Hellcat series and it’s by far one of the best we’ve seen yet.

The new Pro Comp OSP is a 9mm, 15-round capacity micro-compact handgun that intends to mimic the experience you’d get with a larger 9mm handgun while maintaining the most concealable package possible. The way that the Hellcat Pro Comp OSP accomplishes this is with a standard Hellcat grip, a 3.7” hammer-forged barrel, and an integral single-port compensator. This compensator is where the magic of the OSP comes into play and the single port when combined with hot carry or range ammo, will put in a lot of work to counteract the typical snappiness of the relatively small gun. This should give you better control over the gun overall.

The OSP isn’t exactly a flashy gun and could use a few touch-ups here and there. Thankfully there is a decent amount of aftermarket support for the Hellcat series including different triggers like the Tyrant I.T.T.S trigger, magazine extensions that add a few more rounds, sleeker rear cover plates, and of course extended and enhanced controls for range junkies who are after faster splits, reload times, and who generally want to make their Hellcat into their own creation. Tyrant even sells pre-assembled magazines with their extensions on them if you’re not looking to do the work for yourself.

There are a lot of people who are dead set on making guns boring. Yes, you should learn to shoot your stock gun proficiently, you should learn how to shoot virtually any Vinilla gun proficiently. Today’s shooters are going to the range for a lot more than self-defense, the Hellcat Pro Comp OSP is proof of this and proof that people like to shoot guns that they can repeatedly, easily, and quickly make hits with, and then go home and carry the gun as if they would carry any other micro-compact carry gun. I think the integrated comp goes a long way for those who are willing to, learn how to work with it and the ammo that it’s optimized for. Beyond that, the Hellcat Pro Comp OSP is probably equal parts range toy, and EDC gun for me. But what do you think? We’d love to hear from you about your thoughts on the Springfield Hellcat Pro Comp OSP!
